Chapter 3: Computer and Internet Policies

The Cabinet is currently developing two policies which deal with church computers and internet usage. The first, tentatively entitled Church Electronic Device Policy, is intended to be a sample policy which will be presented as a suggestion for administrative boards and councils to adopt for use in local congregations. The purpose of this policy is to strive to provide an environment which allows for safe use of technology in a way consistent with Christian principles and the United Methodist Discipline and Book of Resolutions.

The sample policy will be available to local churches as soon as it is finalized by the Cabinet. Upon completion, it can be accessed through district superintendents’ offices and through the Conference web site, www.moumethodist.org.

The second policy under formation is a protocol for the Cabinet itself. It will delineate the procedure when the Cabinet is presented with allegations dealing with the abuse of church computers and internet usage at the church building and at church-related activities.
